Westminister Church of Detroit

 Mission Statement

Westminster Church of Detroit is an evolving, spirit-led church called to proclaim the good news of Christ to all.  This calling leads us to teach, learn and demonstrate the faith in loving action.  We celebrate oneness in Christ through intentional diversity.

Who We Are

  • We are individuals and families from throughout Metropolitan Detroit who, although at all stages of faith, understanding and commitment, are drawn together in unity by common devotion to Jesus Christ.
  • We are drawn together too by our desire to express that devotion as a multiracial congregation that seeks to be inclusive by welcoming all diverse elements of our contemporary society--a church for all people.  (Galatians 3:27-29)
  • We believe that we are "ambassadors for Christ," that "God is making his appeal through us," and that God "is entrusting to us the message of reconciliation" for a society in great need of healing.  (2 Corinthians 5:18-20)
  • We believe that we are called by God especially to exhibit by word and intentional action a ministry of reconciliation that "breaks down every form of discrimination based on racial or ethnic difference"  (Confession of 1967) as well as other forms of discrimination in our contemporary society.

Our unique resources and location in Northwest Detroit call us to minister aggressively in our immediate neighborhood while we reach out to others farther away who share our vision of unity through diversity.

What We Do

For members and friends, who gather regularly as the people of God known as Westminster Church of Detroit, we:

  • create a church home of unique warmth in which we will grow in spirituality and discipleship as we "walk humbly with (our) God" (Micah 6:8) and, more particularly, in which the Christian faith is nourished and sustained through authentic and compelling preaching and teaching that is biblically sound and informed by our reformed (Presbyterian) tradition,
  • are sensitive to one another's needs, however unlike ourselves the others may appear to be; and
  • equip one another to "do justice and love kindness" (Micah 6:8)

For the immediate and wider community of metropolitan Detroit (including our own congregation), we

  • provide ministries that "do justice," working to restore basic fairness so that the weak and vulnerable members of our society are protected and empowered; and
  • provide ministries that "love kindness,"  assisting to care for those unable to fully care for themselves.

For all people, through our participation in the ministries of the church-at-large, especially the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), we:

  • unite with all Christians by bonds of faith in God's healing love to support ministries to the poor and oppressed (Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19), in hope of overcoming all things that disregard the humanity of others.
