Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake

Changing Lives Since 1925

Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake has been part of the outreach and educational ministry program of Westminster Church of Detroit since 1925. It embodies the intense commitment of the congregation to service in the community.

This commitment presents Westminster Church of Detroit and Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake a boundless opportunity for continuing a historic ministry to the diverse youth of the community. The camp provides a gentle environment where youth develop faith, a sense of self worth and responsibility in a Christian community.

Young persons, ages 7 to 17, from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds join to experience and share community. Campers come from throughout the metropolitan area, all of Michigan and the rest of the United States.

The enthusiastic, gifted and multicultural staff are carefully selected and thoroughly trained. The staff includes counselors from the metropolitan area as well as from Europe, Great Britain and South Africa. The Executive Director and Director of Development are year-round staff members of Westminster Church of Detroit.

Camp Westminster is proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the State of Michigan. In addition, the directors are members of the Presbyterian Church Camp and Conference Association.

The camp occupies forty wooded, lakefront acres 200 miles north of Detroit, and an outpost site on the Au Sable River. It is surrounded by hundreds of acres of state forest. The camp’s forty buildings, recreational facilities, and outdoor chapel are situated on Higgins Lake, known for its crystal clear spring-fed water and soft, sandy bottom. It is ideally located in Northern Michigan as a starting point for Camp Westminster Expeditions which have traveled to the Pictured Rocks, South Manitou Island, and Isle Royale.

Each year many church groups, school groups, scouts and other organizations benefit from retreats offered in the fall, winter and spring; the high and low ropes course; the Lighthouse Climb; the Prayer Trail; the Labyrinth; and the beautiful location and facilities. During the summer months neighbors and vacationers are invited to Westminster-By-The-Lake, a weekly worship service on Sunday mornings at 11 a.m. in the outdoor chapel.
